Personal Development 101: What is Personal Development & Resources to Begin Your Journey

Personal Development.. What is it? It’s the never ending search for self-betterment. Over the past two years, I’ve literally jumped head first into the world of self-help, personal development, manifestation, the Law of the Attraction, all the buzzwords to describe this… better way of life.

With the internet these days, your means of preferred consumption of self-development is almost endless. You can search any free media source out there to find the type of information you are looking for. YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts have a plethora of Podcasts and Vlogs of being going SO deep into the topics I mentioned: the Law of Attraction and Manifestation are two of the most “rabbit-hole” spirals once you start your Personal Development journey, and with good reason.


I also just want to say that my Personal Development journey goes hand in hand with what I will refer to as my Spiritual Awakening. That term is is probably somewhat audacious to some of you so I am going to keep from calling this a Spiritual Awakening... because I believe that is more up to each individual to find their own divine path.

I obviously love using Astrology for Personal Development because it clarifies your dominant personality traits and, in some ways, gives you personal permission to just be the way you are. You have inherent traits and emotions and they’re neither good nor bad, they just are. I like using Astrology to pick apart these personality characteristics and dive deeper by journaling about myself and the way I see myself in regards to what is happening in current Astrology. This is just a fun and personal tool to understand your inner and outer emotions! Definitely holler at me for more information about your cosmic personality and how it relates to your life.


Back to other genres of Personal Development and how to use them. The Law of Attraction has quickly risen in popularity over the last several years. I didn’t even know what this was 3 years ago, or didn’t really think it was a “real thing”.


The Law of Attraction isn’t just a movie.


The Law of Attraction says where you focus your energy is what you will attract into your life.


This is a cold hard reality when you think about it. If you wake up in the morning cranky, and you dwell on how cranky you are and things that keep going wrong, you are attracting more and more of a downward spiral for your morning, and the entire rest of your day. Maybe even longer. If you make the mental decision to not let a minor inconvenience trip up your entire day, you’re already on the way to re-wiring the “this day sucks” circuits in your brain.


Believe it or not, you are so conditioned by your subconscious to wake up in the same reality/mindset, in the same mood, every single day.. That is takes your actual conscious, mental decision to switch things up in order to not live the same mundane life every single day. Now don’t get me wrong, the mundane tasks in life are vital. You must do your laundry, you must get groceries and feed your family if you have one, you must spend loving time with your children and spouse, if you have them.


One thing I must make absolutely clear in your Personal Development journey is that you will become extremely ungrounded with reality, at times. You will be on cloud nine; your internal reality is becoming amazing, you no longer dwell on the same issues that bothered and ruled your life before, but the energy from other people quickly and effortlessly controls you. You let the stress of potty training kids or challenging bosses or partners infiltrate your positive energy bubble and you spiral.


Learning to control your energy and becoming grounded, and untouchable in other people’s energy (positive or negative) is imperative to inner peace. Staying neutral when you would have otherwise gone right to a chaotic mindset is super important. Everything will be fine. Everything will be chill.

I understand this whole this is probably sounding so out there, even esoteric. But tell me what is wrong with becoming a better, more loving person? You can still achieve great things and climb to the top of your personal mountain. In fact, a path of self-help will help you get to your goals quicker because you are unblocking all the fear you have about reaching them.


I’m not worthy.


I’m not good enough, not smart enough, not thin enough, not experienced enough.


I’m not enough is an excuse you should never be okay with anymore because we are all inherently enough as we are. We were put here with a purpose and the things that we desire are the things that we should pursue, or why else would we so deeply care about them?


After a particularly heinous season of my life, my mother with her unwavering optimism watched Gabby Bernstein on some show promoting her new book, Super Attractor. As she did often, my mom got online and Amazon Primed the book directly to my house. I remember reading the cover of the book and the first couple pages thinking to myself, my mom has lost her ever-loving mind.


What is this hocus pocus-sorcery sh*t? It is life changing, that’s what it is. Gabby Bernstein’s book Super Attractor began a slow mindset shift for me. A shift that I’ll never come back from.

This book introduced me to the world of manifestation, attracting abundance into my life, and really changing my mindset at its core to create the life I want. Seeing the world through these Sepia-colored glasses, if you will, was ruining my life.


I am meant to see the world in full color. I was born with rose-colored glasses on for a reason, but I lost them along the way and replaced them with something that was never mine. It’s not an easy journey where you can just snap your fingers and be like “ope, I’m okay with myself”!


It takes some real inner work; a lot of journaling on your thoughts, and asking yourself about your behaviors, events in your life, your emotions, until you are able to get to the source of what is causing you pain, fear, or blocking you from moving forward in your life. Self-sabotage is a very real thing. It’s as easy as having very minor inconveniences in your life and you use those reasons to project your feelings of inadequacy, or whatever it may be, to your determent.

Here are some recommendations on a few of my favorite Self-Help, Personal Development, etc. etc. etc outlets!


Favorite Podcasts:

The Mindset, Magic & Manifestation Podcast hosted by Mikayla Jai. This girl is amazing. She’s super young (23) & with it and gives a swift kick in the ass when it comes to unblocking your limiting beliefs to level up. I’ve taken several of her courses and she’s literally amazing. She helps you uncover things that your subconscious (unconscious) mind has stored in your brain and are running your life. You have belief systems in place that you don’t even know are there…. Mikayla digs deep.


*I like to give peoples ages because I always find it interesting. Tons and tons and TONS of women don’t make the shift into living their Higher Self life until late into their 20’s or early 30’s. Perhaps this is because of our Saturn Return when we are 29.5 years old. If you have your shit together in your early 20’s, I applaud and bow to you.


Make Shift Happen with Samantha Daily. I don’t follow her as closely as I do Mikayla, but she offers tons of great Manifestation, Self-Love content that I find really easy and enjoyable to follow. She isn’t as tough love as Mikayla, and focuses more on the attracting love and relationship type of information. You’ll find plenty of PD and Manifestation tools with Samantha Daily.


And She Rises Podcast with Amanda Frances. Another serving of tough love.. Amanda Frances is known as the Money QUEEN. This woman is young, like my age around 30 I think, and she makes multiple 7 figures a year based on her manifestation classes. Anyone who makes that kind of cash being a young female entrepreneur, I am here to take notes from HER. She also has a book.


Soul on Fire Podcast with The Balanced Blonde, Jordan Younger. Jordan is incredible. She's healed from a severe and life changing diagnosis of Lyme Disease and is well on her way to a full recover. She has been making a shirt in her content since I've discovered her from more of the health lifestyle influence to more spiritual lifestyle influence and I'm all the way here for it. She always talks about Astrology, and posts about it often on Instagram and is super social with us in the comments. Love her. Highly recommend.


One last rec on the podcasts because everyone loves podcasts and they're easy to digest with ear buds while doing one of the other million things life throws your way. Plus, you could stop with the constant true crime episodes. I'll save this rant for another time, but I'm just saying the more anxiety inducing content you consume, the more anxiety you're going to naturally feel.


Expanded by To Be Magnetic, hosted by Lacy Phillips. This podcast is newer to me, but it's all about just how REAL manifesting our desires is. Lacy Phillips lived (still does) in LA and was desperately trying to be an actress. Long story short, she ended up finding Manifestation and putting her own spin on it. She's put so much work into this that she even trademarked the term Neural Manifestation because she used scientific processes to explain how to actually, scientifically, make sense of MIND over MATTER. More on deep brain stuff in a minute with Dr. Joe Dispenza.


My podcast of course! 😊 I’m just getting going, duh, so I truly appreciate all of your support. It means to world to me to those of you that are listening! While the girls above are professionals and I’m learning from them, I’m putting out of the same information and sharing my thoughts about how to use it in your life. Like I’ve already said, the more people being lead to this kind of information, the better. If you will allow me to be out there for a second, the more we are all being lead to the light of being ourselves, the more we show other people that we are allowed to be ourselves. Think about it. Just by being yourself and doing things you enjoy and sharing them, you’ll inspire others to do what THEY love.


A couple of Self-Help and Personal Development Books:

1. Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein. As already described. Gabby will introduce you to a world you didn’t know existed. A world that is already inside yourself. All you have to do is open the book and open your mind. Gabby will give you the tools you need to start shifting your thoughts from “why me” to “why not me”? I will say this book is out there, borderline “woo-woo”.


2. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself – Dr. Joe Dispenza. Dr. Joe is literally FAMOUS online in the world of manifestation. He is an actual Chiropractor and has a bunch of other Scientific certifications and degrees. Dr. Joe teaches us how to re-wire our brains from the ground up, and he teaches us how to do it in a scientific way that is based in fact. He isn’t selling you some woo-woo crap. He’s an accredited thought-leader in the world of using your BRAIN to change your life.


3. Untamed by Glennon Doyle. This book is definitely self-help and PD but also an auto-bio of Glennon’s life. She is a great, vulnerable writer who allows you to see the emotional pits of her life and the ability to bounce back. She writes in such a beautiful way that makes everyone feel like it’s okay to love yourself, even when you really (REALLY) suck. Read this book.


To wrap this up because it has been an incredibly long post, I hope this has been an interesting starting point for you to start a conversation with yourself on how to start bettering yourself and bettering your life. Again, you don’t have to have a bad, hard, life of despair to be better. Things can be fine… But why can’t they be amazing?
